Ananda Marga's story

Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar, Ananda Marga, founded in 1955 in India. Shrii Shrii Anandamurtijii, as he was called, instructed his followers in spiritual techniques, developed his ideas about philosophy and ethics in countless lectures, and had traveled to India within a few years many thousands of followers belonging movement launched.

Spirituality, morality, service

P.R. Sarkar was the first President of Ananda Marga. He gave the movement its profound, pragmatic philosophy from the outset a clear and unambiguous direction. Spirituality, morality and service to man and nature were and are the foundation of Ananda Marga, both theoretically and in practical action. Social injustice, whether suppression of women, exploitation of the poor or Indian caste system, are not tolerated.

Resistance and perseverance

In the fifties and sixties, the Ananda Marga's popularity increased rapidly in India. The proverbial integrity and social commitment of Margiis led however to the first confrontation.

Founded in 1959 PRSarkar own social and economic theory, which he 'PROUT' called: the progressive use theory (Progressive Utilization Theory). Developed as a realistic alternative to the prevailing doctrines of communism and capitalism, this commitment called his opponents on the final plan. Therefore tried the then government by law from entering Margiis administrative hold, but failed before the Supreme Court.

Political persecution

In the early seventies PRSarkar was raised in a politically motivated trial for alleged incitement to murder on trial and sentenced to life imprisonment. During his imprisonment several attacks have been perpetrated on his life - bills, the author could be traced back up to the highest government circles. Miraculously, he survived all attempts to remove him. As a result of a poison attack by the prison doctor, he lost part of his vision. His 5 ½ - year-old fasting protest attracted much attention.

Peak and end of the prosecution

In 1975, the Indian government imposed a state of emergency under Indhira Gandhi. Like countless other opposition groups were also Ananda Marga declared illegal and many of the followers were torn from their families, imprisoned and tortured. After cessation of the state in 1977 it came under international protests, the long awaited and fought for appeal hearing in the trial of Anandamurtiji in which this was in October 1978, after seven years, acquitted of the charges and released from custody. At times it had come at this time to a radicalization of individual members. Despite the ban, Ananda Marga spread in these years in many countries in the world.
