The practice of Ashtanga Yoga.
Description
The practice of Ashtanga Yoga is an ancient and powerful discipline for cultivating physical, mental and spiritual health. Progressive techniques of breath, posture and movement, cleanse, stretch and strengthen the body as well as focus and calm the mind. A deeper experience of the self becomes possible through consistent practice. Tim Miller has been studying and teaching Ashtanga Yoga for over thirty years and was the first American certified to teach by Pattabhi Jois at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India. Tim has a thorough knowledge of this ancient system, which he imparts in a dynamic, yet compassionate and playful manner. "My goal as a teacher is to inspire a passion for practice. The practice itself, done consistently and accurately, is the real teacher." Tim teaches workshops and retreats throughout the United States and abroad. Alison Lewis has been practicing yoga with Tim Miller since 1994. In 1997 she took her first trip to India to study with Pattabhi Jois for 6 months. Since then she has returned to Mysore four times. Alison has completed teacher trainings with Tim Miller, Nancy Gilgoff, Erich Schiffman and Aadil Palkhivala. and has received authorization by Pattabhi Jois from the AYRI in Mysore, India. In addition to teaching yoga at Tim Miller's Ashtanga Yoga Center, Alison is a Structural Integration/Rolfing practitioner. This course is designed to give participants an in depth experience of the Primary series of Ashtanga Yoga as taught by K. Pattabhi Jois. There are two basic methods for transmitting this teaching. One is the "Mysore style" method in which students in the class work independently at their own level of proficiency with hands on assistance from one or more teachers. The second method of teaching involves guiding the students through the practice by counting the vinyasa in the traditional Sanskrit. In this course we will have an opportunity to experience these two types of teaching. Particular emphasis will be given to practical "hands on" experience. The course is appropriate for those who are interested in teaching, those who are currently teaching, as well as students of ashtanga yoga who would like to deepen their knowledge of their own practice. This one week intensive training will consist of three daily classes, including an early morning practice session. The prerequisite for the course is a basic knowledge of, and reasonable proficiency at, the primary series of Ashtanga Yoga.
